The second batch

On 15th of March the second batch has arrived. It was not in the plan but we got a special offer and could not say "No" to this. This batch contents 12 piglets. They are ready to sell estimated in the beginning of June.

Our piggery has now 22 piglets from the maximum of 62.

Technical news

To ensure a secure future supply for the piglets with water, we have installed automatic watering.

The piglets need daily, up to the temperature outside different amounts of drinking water. From now on they can drink as much as they need and want. This way we could minimize the risk to lose a piglet because of missing water.

The secret about units

How to manage the rooms?
His simple answer: We built units and from this moment we never need to use the word room. Let's built 3 unit... whats easy because we have 9 rooms.

Why we need 3 units?
His answer sounds simple like the one before: We wanna fatten piglets up to 3 month. So we need for every month a unit. And then he is combining the rooms in the following way and the result is fascinating:

Red is a unit with maximum occupancy for 8 + 6 + 6 = 20 piglets.
Blue is a unit with maximum occupancy for 8 + 6 + 6 = 20 piglets.
Green can be occupied with 8 + 8 + 6 = 22 piglets.

The nice thing by thinking in units: It's not important how much piglets you wanna buy for every unit. The maximum occupancy is established. Up to this maximum, it does not matter how many animals are purchased per month. And you can keep them in the premises of a unit as you like.

The new business plan

This piggery has a nice floor plan and the rooms were large enough for a commercial occupancy. So we decided to help for a fast reopening. How to get the most out of this piggery? Again with mother pigs and piglets or only by fatten piglets?

My friend is accountant and he is making a plan. He adviced: only fatten piglets up to 90 days. How many piglets do we can feed? How many can we sell for a constantly income monthly? The way to answer this important questions was to know: How many piglets we can put in every room?

As a summary of all rooms we count: 62 piglets are possible in this piggery. A nice number as we want fatten them for maximum 90 days or 3 month. He devided 9 rooms by 3 month and then he teached us, how to think in units.

Some words about the past

This piggery was built in 2007 as a typical "Backyard" piggery. The budget for construction costs amounted to 100,000 PHP.

The floor plan was designed for 9 rooms. 4 bigger rooms and 5 smaller rooms.

The larger rooms were designed for mother pigs. The smaller rooms were designed for piglets.

The piggery ran until 2010. Then we were forced, for personal reasons to give up the work for a while.

In 2011 we were able to open the piggery again. With help from good friends, some new ideas and their financial support. The most important question was: How to get the most out of this building? Before we was holding up to 5 mother pigs and up to 30 piglets but this doesn't really work stable and constant. In the next entry I let the friends explain their ideas.

Arrived: The first batch

The first batch of piglets has arrived. They are 10 and we got them in the age of 37 days.

This batch will be ready for selling in May.
